Brit Awards host Mo Gilligan forced to apologise over Lewis Capaldi name mistake

Mo Gilligan was forced to issue an apology to Lewis Capaldi at Saturday night's Brit Awards, after he called Lewis Capaldi by the wrong name, before blaming the 'strong drinks' from the bar.

For the second year succession, the notoriously tricky job of hosting the Brits fell on the shoulders of the comedian and Masked Singer star, as a packed crowd of big name stars and fans packed out London's O2 Arena for the annual event.

Performances on the night came from multiple winner Harry Styles; Best New Act champions Wet Leg, American icon Lizzo and former Brits winner Lewis Capaldi. Scottish musician Lewis was nominated for Best Single for his number 1 Forget Me and he also took to the stage, flanked by a gospel choir, to perform the track live.

It was down to Brits 2023 presenter Mo to introduce Lewis to the stage but, as he did, he got the simple task horribly wrong, when he said: "Here with his amazing number 1 single Forger Me, it's Sam Capaldi."

Lewis himself seemed undeterred by the error but it didn't take viewers at home long to call Mo out on the mistake. Taking to Twitter, one blasted: "Not Mo Gilligan saying "Sam Capaldi" instead of "Lewis Capaldi" ... you had one job," with a second tweeting: "Bring back Mick Fleetwood & Sam Fox, or is it Sam Capaldi?!! Anyway, they were much better than Mo Gilligan."

A third posted: "Mo Gilligan making Sam Fox and Mick Fleetwood look like seasoned professionals" but others speculated that Mo's actions were deliberate and a nod to Lewis losing out to Sam Fender for Brits Critics Choice in 2019.

Mo did apologise for his mistake shortly after, blaming the strong drinks on offer at the O2 Arena.
