Brit, 50, killed in paragliding tragedy close to popular Spanish mountain peak

A British paraglider has died after an accident in the Spanish Pyrenees on Thursday where paramedics rushed to his aid but were unable to save him, it is reported.

The 50 year-old man was severely injured on the south side of the Pico Gallinero mountain in the Aragonese Pyrenees and while he was conscious when a rescue team reached him, he later died.

At 1.30pm, police in Huesca received an emergency call about the accident and that the paraglider was conscious, but with difficulty breathing.

Police and a medical team rushed to the scene via a helicopter that was scrambled where they found people trying to give the injured man CPR, it is reported.

But while paramedics then began treating the man they were unable to save him.

The man’s body was removed by helicopter and later taken to the Hospital Provincial de Huesca, reported Cadena Ser.

Police have said that they have launched an investigation.

The Pico Gallinero is popular for practising sport with many people using the peak for paragliding and rock climbing.

On Wednesday two Spanish climbers, in their 50s, were on the mountain when they were hit by a rockfall which left them hanging unconscious, 350m in the air, from ropes.

A mountain rescue team was able to reach them, in a prolonged operation due to dangerous conditions and the possibility of a fresh rockfall, before they were taken to hospital.

The death of the unnamed Brit is the second this year in the Pyrenees from paragliding, with the other man, from Barcelona, losing his life in June. There have been a total of 14 deaths from all activities on the mountains during 2022.

Brit hiker Esther Dingley died in the Pyrenees after having gone missing in November 22, 20202, following a WhatsApp video call from atop the Pic de Sauvegarde where she was talking to her boyfriend Daniel Coelgate.

It was not until the following August that her body was found by her boyfriend.
