Brit, 27, drowns in Corfu as desperate onlookers tried to pull him out sea

A British man has drowned in the sea in Greece, according to reports.

The tragedy happened in Kerasia in northern Corfu at around 5.30pm yesterday afternoon.

Desperate onlookers attempted to pull him from the sea after seeing him struggling in the water several hundred metres from the shore, witnesses said.

Coastguard officers frantically tried to save his life, but were unable to do so and the 27-year-old died before he reached the hospital, Corfu Press reports.

The victim is believed to have been in Corfu on holiday with his girlfriend, according to news site Enimerosi, which says the man who died was 24.

It is the second tragedy to occur involving a British victim in the area this week.

On Monday mum-of-four Claire Glatman died after she was hit by a speedboat off Avlaki beach.

Three young English nationals were questioned in connection with Mrs Glatman's death.

The boat was pulling a water skier and did not stop when Mrs Glatman was struck off Avlaki beach at about 10am, local media reported.

She was on holiday with her husband Mark, 63, and the eldest of her two daughters, who are in a "state of shock".

The couple purchased a villa on the island and lived there part of the year.
