Bristolians could be waiting four weeks to have bins collected if they are missed by "stretched" waste crews

Bristol Waste crews will no longer return for missed collections if residents fail to put out their bins on time, Marvin Rees has announced.

The mayor said they were now “stretched” because of the impact of coronavirus, but he urged people to continue to report fly-tipping, especially as Bristol City Council’s rubbish tips are no longer open to the public.

In a video message posted on Twitter on Thursday (April 2), he said: “We have managed to maintain waste and recycling collections that are pretty close to normal service.

“Unfortunately the crews are being stretched, as you would expect, which means from today they are no longer going to be able to return for missed collections.

“That means you will have to get your waste and recycling out after 6pm the night before or before 6am the morning of.

“We need your cooperation to make this work.

“The crews will still return to collect assisted clinical waste or chargeable collections if these are reported.”

What happens to your plastic

In Bristol black bin waste is collected every two weeks, while recycling and food waste is collected weekly.

Mr Rees said residents should phone 0117 922 2100 to let Bristol Waste know.

He said: “We will do all we can to make sure collections are not missed but strict social distancing measures have been put in place across their sites, so rest assured the crews’ health and safety is being looked after.

“We also need people to continue to report incidents of fly-tipping so we can keep up enforcement against those who choose to dump their waste on the rest of us.

“Unlike some other areas of the country we are not seeing a spike in fly-tipping at the moment.

“We do want to keep it this way.”
