Bristol Zoo closing: Mayor says relocation was 'the very best decision'

The shock revelation that Bristol Zoo is closing its Clifton site is "the best decision" for its future, the city's mayor has said.

Marvin Rees has also hinted that the homes could be built on the existing site - but only where buildings are currently, with the gardens retained as part of an agreement with the landowner and council.

Bristol Zoological Society announced at 2pm this afternoon (November 27) that the zoo will be sold, and animals will be relocated to its Wild Place Project in South Gloucestershire.

It said the move, which will see the zoo close in 2022, was taken to create a "world-class zoo and safeguard the future of the organisation".

Bristol mayor Mr Rees has now issued a public statement.

He said: "In the face of financial challenge, the zoo has made the very best decision for not only animal welfare and its staff, but for future generations who will have the opportunity to visit and learn at a world-class zoo offering spacious, modern, accessible facilities."

He revealed that the zoological society has agreed to retain the gardens and ensure any post-closure development is responsible.

Mr Rees said: "We are grateful the zoo has pledged to make responsible decisions for the site when it closes in 2022, retaining the beautiful gardens, and ensuring any development builds homes only where existing buildings have previously been, and offers affordable housing.

"I look forward to visiting the new Bristol Zoo when it opens at Wild Place Project site, with my family for many years to come, and thank the zoo for its continued commitment to doing the very best for Bristol, and the animals we all love."
