Bristol Zoo advises visitors to 'still wear face masks' indoors after Freedom Day

Bristol Zoo Gardens is advising visitors to continue to wear a face covering in all indoor spaces from today (July 19,) despite it no longer being a legal requirement.

The popular attraction says it is “still asking everyone to act carefully and remain cautious, for the safety of our staff, volunteers and fellow visitors.”

Visitors are encouraged to wear masks in its animal houses, through-ways, toilets, as well as its admissions and retail buildings.

And it’s not just face masks that are being encouraged.

“We advise visitors and Members to continue to pre-book tickets on our website, in advance of your visit,” it states on its website. “A limited number of tickets are available at timeslots each day.”

It's also encouraging every visitor over the age of 16 to provide their individual contact details on arrival, in line with Test and Trace.

"Visitors can either scan the official NHS QR code on arrival or complete a form," it states.

But the zoo is relaxing some measures today, including removing its one-way system outdoors and reopening some 'additional areas.'

It tweeted: "We have great news! Following the recent Government announcement, we’ve been busy preparing to reopen some additional areas of the Zoo from today, 19 July. This includes the reopening of the Lemur Walkthrough as well as the return of our Animal Talks!"

Bristol Zoo joins a string of shops and pubs still advising customers to wear face masks indoors from today.

While the legal requirement to wear face masks in most settings has been scrapped, government guidance states people will still be "expected" to wear masks in crowded spaces.

Essentially, businesses will be responsible for making and enforcing face mask rules, not the government.
