Bristol weather: When thunderstorms are due to hit today

Bristol is in store for stormy weather today and temperatures of up to 23C.

The BBC is predicting 12 hours of "thundery showers" from 4pm this afternoon (Sunday, August 16).

However, the Met Office has a different outlook, with no thunderstorms forecast but light showers throughout the day.

Bad weather across much of the country yesterday forced the cancellation of the Red Arrows VJ Day flypast, which was due to pass through parts of Somerset near Bristol.

The RAF display team had planned to fly over London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast to commemorate 75 years since VJ Day, but only the Belfast leg of the spectacle was able to take place.

Meteorologist Matthew Box said Saturday’s stormy weather broke out in Kent before moving across Essex, where some places saw 40 mm of rain in around 40 minutes.

The Met Office said Writtle, a mile from Chelmsford, had 52.8 mm of rainfall in a 12-hour period.

In Bristol, the BBC had predicted thunderstorms from midnight and into the early hours of this morning, but the timing has now shifted to this afternoon.

The West of England is among areas covered by a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, which will remain active until 9pm tomorrow (Monday).

It advises people of the possibility of flooding, lightning strikes, poor driving conditions and potential power cuts.
