Bristol weather: What the Met Office says about September's early mini heatwave

Bristol is set to bask in highs of 20C today (Tuesday) as wall-to-wall sunshine bakes the city.

Warmer temperatures are returning this week after a chilly Bank Holiday weekend when lows of 4C were recorded overnight on Sunday.

Experts at the Met Office say the mercury will hover around 19C for most of the week.

But there's a high chance of rain on both Wednesday and Thursday, before drier weather moves in next weekend.

This morning is set to be a sunny one, with temperatures warming up quickly. By 9am, when lots of parents could be doing their first school run in six months, the mercury should hit 14C.

Sunny spells are expected throughout the afternoon, with highs of 20C around 4pm.

The Met Office said that although the bank holiday was "unseasonably cool", the low temperatures have not broken any records.

Alex Burkill, meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "It has been quite extreme at times, we've had some very hot weather and then the two storms towards the end of the month.

"Even this bank holiday has been unseasonably cool, it's not that often that we get temperatures around freezing in August.

"(The weather) has brought everything this month and that's not really going to be captured in the monthly averages.

"They're not going to show the extremes that we've had."

South West forecast

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:
