Bristol weather: What severe weather warning in Wales means for city

Bristol may be escaping a severe weather warning but can still expect some heavy rain on Saturday, the Met Office has said.

The yellow alert for rain across much of south Wales means there could be difficult driving conditions from 6am to 11.59pm tomorrow, with spray and flooding on roads potentially causing delays. Bus and train journeys could also take longer.

While the worst of the weather is on the other side of the Bristol Channel, Bristol is set for a deluge tomorrow morning.

Rain will begin at around 2am on Saturday, turning heavy at around 4am and staying heavy until 11am.

We can then expect overcast skies until light rain begins shortly before midnight and lasting into the early hours of Sunday.

Weather warning

The Met Office chief forecaster says the wet and windy weather will develop overnight Friday into Saturday, and adds: "Wet and windy weather developing during Friday night will persist through Saturday.

"Rain will be heavy at times, especially Saturday morning.

"Rain may ease in some areas during the afternoon before becoming heavier and more persistent again during the evening. 25 to 50 mm of rain may fall quite widely across the warning area and as much as 75 to 125 mm is possible over parts of the Brecon Beacons."

South West Met Office forecast

Today: A fine day ahead after a chilly start. Fair-weather cloud bubbling up by the late morning, with the odd light shower expected, mostly in the east of the region. Turning breezier by the afternoon. Maximum temperature 15 °C.

Tonight: Light rain in Cornwall but a fine evening elsewhere. Rain becomes widespread and heavy, accompanied by strong winds and coastal gales, progressing across the entire region by the small hours. Minimum temperature 4 °C.

Saturday: Widespread and heavy rain through the morning, easing later but persisting over high ground and far west. Drier eastwards by evening. Strong winds throughout, risk of gales in exposed areas. Maximum temperature 16 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday: Nights become milder but remaining unsettled and windy, with risks of gales in exposed areas. Showers, thundery at times into next week, merging into longer spells of rain at times.
