Bristol weather to be as hot as Lanzarote but thunderstorms are on the way

Bristol is set to see a weekend of glorious sunshine - before thunderstorms hit the UK next week.

A Met Office yellow weather warning covers the whole UK for Monday and Tuesday, with the possibility of lightning and flooding.

Most of today (August 8) is expected to be sunny, though the Met Office predicts cloudy spells late in the morning and at points in the afternoon.

Temperatures are likely to peak at 29C from 5pm to 6pm, meaning Bristol is set to be as hot as Lanzarote today.

The Met Office expects the city to be sunny again on Sunday, with the same peak of 29C, at 4pm.

Highs of 28C are forecast for both Monday and Tuesday - and a yellow warning for thunderstorms is set to be in place throughout both days.

The Met Office says: "Some places are likely to see severe thunderstorms early next week - but there is significant uncertainty in location and timing."

It has advised:

  • There is a small chance homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes and large hail
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to public transport
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and increased chance of accidents
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.

The Met Office has also warned people to be careful in the heatwave this weekend.

Grahame Madge, a Met Office spokesman, advised people to expect "a dramatic rise in temperature in some parts, exceeding the heatwave threshold".

“After a slightly cooler week, people should make sure they aren’t caught out," he added.

"If you need to travel, keep hydrated and apply sunscreen; the chance of sunburn and dehydration will be much higher.”
