Bristol weather: Gale force winds batter region as major bridge closes

Gale force winds are causing havoc across the South West this weekend.

Gusts of more than 40mph have seen a major bridge close and incidents on the M4.

And the weather is set to worsen tomorrow (Sunday, February 6) with a mixture of heavy wind and "persistent" rain making for grim conditions.

The Met Office says wind gusts will reach 43mph in Bristol tonight.

There is an 80 percent chance of rainfall this evening, increasing to 95 percent tomorrow morning.

A mixture of heavy winds, cloud and drizzle has seen the M48 Severn Bridge shut completely to traffic as of 5.15pm today, with motorists urged to use the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge instead.

Meanwhile a serious incident on the M4 in Wales has closed the road at junction 18.

Things are looking a little brighter for next week, though.

Winds are set to ease from Monday (February 7) and it will start to feel mild, although there will be some drizzle at times.

Met Office forecast for Bristol

This Evening and Tonight:

Outbreaks of rain gradually spreading across the region overnight with some isolated heavier bursts. Remaining cloudy in between. Feeling cold in continued strong winds, with gales developing along coasts. Minimum temperature 5 °C.

Sunday:

A wet start with rain, locally heavy, clearing during the morning. Sunny spells follow but further patchy rain may pass through at times. Another windy day, with coastal gales. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Winds easing into Monday, though becoming cloudy with some drizzle. Feeling increasingly mild but remaining largely cloudy for Tuesday and Wednesday with further rain and drizzle at times.
