Bristol Water says huge water main burst on Whiteladies Road is difficult to fix

Bristol Water engineers are continuing to work to repair a huge water main burst.

The leak left Whiteladies Road underwater for much of the afternoon and well into the rush hour and evening on Tuesday, November 5.

Photos and videos from the scene showed water rushing down the street.

Bristol Water confirmed shortly before 5pm that engineers were on their way to the scene.

In an update shortly before 7.30pm a spokesperson described the repair as "difficult" and added that it is one of the largest water mains they are responsible for.

The road has been closed while engineers continue to work at the scene on Whiteladies Road and Belgrave Road.

In a statement, the spokesperson said: "We've closed Belgrave Road and water levels have now gone down significantly - but please avoid the area.

"The repair itself is proving difficult due to the high volume of water combined with this being one of the largest water mains. All customers are in water.

"We appreciate this is a busy commuter route and we're working as quickly as possible to make the repair. Thank you for your patience."

It is not yet clear when the road will reopen or when the repair might be complete.
