Bristol Water main leak sees bar 'set to lose four-figure sum' as gig disrupted

The director of the Exchange says the venue is set to lose a four-figure sum due to water main damage.

Pavement work from Bristol City Council contractor ETM caused damage to a water main on the corner of Old Market Street and Temple Way at around 11am today (September 13).

Nearby pub The Stag and Hounds has lost water, though it was still open this afternoon, but the Exchange venue was forced to close its cafe shortly before 12pm.

Exchange director Matt Otridge said he has been scrambling to put contingency plans in place to make sure a gig can go ahead this evening.

He said: “We have spent £250 hiring four Portaloos for tonight because we have a gig from a Bristol band, Laid Blak.

“The engineer who came in couldn’t guarantee the water would be running in time, and we have sold 150 tickets for tonight, so we had to make contingency plans.

“I’m just hoping at the end of it all we get compensation, because we probably lost out on £500 in trade from closing the cafe.”

Because water is used to run the flash coolers, the Exchange is unlikely to be able to sell draught tonight.

Mr Otridge said: “It’s probably going to cost us a four-figure sum in all, and I’ve had to spend the afternoon putting all the contingencies in place.

“The engineer said he thought it would be fixed today but he couldn’t guarantee.”

A Bristol Water spokeswoman said low pressure or no water is affecting some buildings on Castle Street, Old Market Street, Queen Street, Jacob Street and other roads.
