Bristol Waste chief requests use of bus lanes for his refuse trucks

Waste trucks in Bristol could use the city's bus lanes if the boss of Bristol Waste has his way.

Managing director Tony Lawless says the idea could speed up collection rounds, thereby minimising disruption on the city's roads.

He has requested the move with the city council claiming it would ease congestion.

Appearing at a Bristol City Council meeting, he revealed the idea after taking questions over traffic disruption caused by the trucks.

He said: "We avoid schools and busy places at certain times.

“We’ve got agreement with the council to start working at 6am, in some areas from 7am, so we hope to get in a bit earlier.

“It is difficult. One of the things I was asking was if we could use the bus lanes as a council vehicle so we could get around a lot quicker than we do now because we get held up in traffic.

“As a council-owned vehicle, could we use the bus lane to speed up the service and get out of town a lot quicker.

“It’s a question that I’ve got hanging at the moment.”

The agreement with the council In October, to move bin collections back to 6am following a trial over the summer months, was to give collection crews more time to get round all properties and this will lead to less missed collections and less congestion on the roads.
