Extinction Rebellion: Bristol University student remanded in custody over London train roof climate protest

A Bristol university student has been remanded in custody after denying obstructing a train during climate change protests in London.

Luke Watson, 29, who is believed to be a Bristol University student, is one of three people who pleaded not guilty at at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court today (April 18).

Cathy Eastburn, 51 and Mark Ovland also denied the charges which relate to their alleged involvement in obstructing trains at Canary Wharf Station on April 17.

The Extinction Rebellion protests have seen demonstrations and disruption to transport services across London and in towns and cities across the country.

Bristol University's student paper Epigram, reports Watson is a philosophy student.

He was charged with obstructing trains or carriages on the railway by an unlawful act, contrary to section 36 of the Malicious Damage Act 1861.

Watson, of Manuden, Essex, has been denied bail and will spend the next month behind bars before appearing at Blackfriars Crown Court on May 16.

The maximum sentence for this charge is two years.

Bristol Live reported yesterday how former Bristol University student Robin Boardman-Pattison, who has lived in Lockleaze, stormed out of a Sky TV news interview after being grilled by presenter Adam Boulton about the protests.

The 21-year-old, who was a languages student, ended the interview after Boulton slammed the campaigners for being 'incompetent'.
