Bristol tributes paid to ‘true legend’ local DJ

Tributes have been paid to a Bristol DJ known as Black Jenny, who played venues across parts of the city.

Jennifer Lawrence, 78, lived in Barton Hill, where she raised her three sons.

Close friend Julie Bush, who knew her as Jenny, described her as a “true legend” who was “great friends with everyone”.

She noted that Jenny was a single mother and that life “wasn’t easy”, but that she was a popular DJ in the city for over 40 years and a familiar face in the gay community.

Ms Bush said: “Jenny watched myself and many other friends grow up, then she watched our children grow up, then our grandchildren.

“She never went out anywhere - even just to pubs for a couple of drinks - unless she was dressed to the nines.

"Everything matched from her shoes to her trilby hat - her clothes were out of this world.

“The whole community knew her no matter what age they were.”

Friends and family of Jenny will pay their respects at her funeral on January 10 at 11am.

They will leave the Co-op funeral home on Lawrence Hill in a horse-drawn carriage to Bristol South Crematorium for a midday service.
