Next year’s BBC Radio 6 Music festival will be hosted in Bristol, with some of the city’s pivotal musicians performing at the event, including Roni Size, Tricky, Beak and DJ Pinch.

The first wave of performers were announced by Steve Lamacq and Mary Anne Hobbs during a live broadcast from Bristol’s Watershed today. As well as the aforementioned local acts, including the Mercury prize-winning Size, Primal Scream were also confirmed. Their gig will arrive ahead of their new album Chaosmosis, which they will play live for the first time at the festival.

Also premiering new material is Tricky, who debuts live tracks from his 2016 album, Skilled Mechanics, and art rock group the Blue Aeroplanes, who release their 11th studio album, Welcome. Stranger!, in September. Beak, also known as Billy Fuller and Matt Williams, and Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, will also debut new tracks, following the release of their recent EPs.

“The 6 Music festival is such a special event because it brings all the elements of what we do as a digital radio station into a physical space: the artists, the whole of the station’s staff and presenters, and of course our wonderful listeners,” 6 Music presenter Mary Anne Hobbs said. “This year, the festival is coming to Bristol, a place where music is such a primary element of the DNA of the city. It’s going to be a truly unforgettable experience.”

Having previously visited Manchester and Tyneside, the 6 Music festival in 2016 will take in Bristol venues including Motion, Colston Hall, O2 Academy Bristol, Basement 45 and Trinity.

• 6 Music festival, Bristol, 12 to 14 February. Full line-up announced on Tuesday 19 January.
