Bristol Temple Meads in World Cup of Stations final just months after being compared to 'Poundland'

The historic Bristol Temple Meads railway station has beat out stiff competition in the south west of the country to reach the World Cup of Stations final.

In fact Temple Meads is the only station in the south of the country to reach the final.

Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the early 19th century, Grade I listed Temple Meads is one of the oldest surviving railway buildings in the world and one of the last remaining unimproved mainline train stations in the UK.

And to be named the World Cup winner would be a huge boost for the station especially as the accolade would come just a few months after it was described as the “Poundland of national rail stations.

The comments were made by transport campaigner David Redgewell during a meeting where a multi-million pound revamp of the station was pushed through.

But Poundland were quick to hit back at the comments on Twitter announcing the budget retailer was “somewhat irritated” by the comparison.

Within its response the firm said: “When we sell something for £1, it’s not five times the price if you buy it before 9.30am or after 4.30pm.”

But now thanks to the Twitter popularity contest, run by the Rail Delivery Group to celebrate Stations Day, Bristol Temple Meads could find itself on top once again.

Bristol is now up against Huddersfield, Birmingham New Street and the small but spectacular, semi-circular station of Wemyss Bay, near Greenock, Scotland.

You have until 6pm to cast your vote.

By lunchtime Huddersfield was way ahead of the competition with over 50 per cent of the vote. Bristol is in third place at the moment with 15 per cent - just ahead of Birmingham New Street.

But let’s not accept defeat for Brunel’s station just yet. There is still plenty of time to vote which can do here.
