Bristol man arrested after illegal rave organised

A Bristol man has been arrested, and 38 others fined, after police spotted an illegal rave being advertised online.

Officers also turned away lots of other people attempting to attend the gathering, it's been confirmed.

This incident was praised by Martin Hewitt, chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, as one example where officers took proactive action to stop Covid-19 breaches.

Talking at the Downing Street press conference, he said: "In Bristol, a 19-year-old man was arrested after officers found an advert for an illegal rave on social media.

"Avon and Somerset police prevented this event from happening and issued 38 fines to people who showed up, while also turning away many more.

"We will not waste time trying to reason with people like this, who have no regard for the safety of others.

"Organising parties or large gatherings is dangerous, selfish and totally irresponsible in light of the current threat we face.

"Organisers will be fined, but so too will be the people who choose to attend."

Some of the country's worst Covid breaches were listed by Mr Hewitt during tonight's briefing.

These included a boat party in Hertfordshire with more than 40 people, who paid £30 each for a ticket.

And a mini bus full of people from different households travelling from Cheltenham into Wales to go for a walk.

In Surrey, a £10,000 fine was issued to the organiser of a party, who attempted to claim it was a business event.

He said that police planned to stepped up control across the UK.

"And so it's important for me to be really clear, at this critical time we will have more officers out on dedicated patrols to take action against the small few who are letting us all down," he said.
