Bristol takeaway 'closed until further notice' after receiving zero hygiene rating

A takeaway in Easton which received a zero hygiene rating earlier this year has closed.

Sun Sing Fish Bar on St Marks Road was given the lowest possible rating by a Food Standards Agency (FSA) inspector after they visited the premises on June 19, 2019.

They found there was major improvement necessary in all three of the categories the FSA inspects: hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building and management of food safety.

When contacted by Bristol Live in November, a member of staff at the Chinese takeaway declined to comment on the rating.

There is now a handwritten sign on the front door of the shop which states it is "closed until further notice".

It is understood the sign appeared there around a month ago, although it is not known if the closure is permanent.

The son of the owner, Mr C Lai, said he would like to make it clear the restaurant closure had nothing to do with the zero hygiene rating.

He added: “We closed because my father has been ill in hospital after he suffered a stroke last November.”

The Food Standards Agency classes businesses with a zero rating as 'urgent improvement necessary'.

Inspectors consider how hygienically food is handled, how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored.

They examine the building itself, judging its cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and facilities.

Also key is how the business manages and records what it does to ensure food is safe.

This weekend Bristol Live is publishing a round-up of all the food businesses in Bristol which received a zero hygiene rating in 2019 and whether they have improved, as well as establishments which currently have the rating.

In total there are 28 businesses which received a rating of zero including cafés, restaurants and pubs.
