Bristol social enterprise Coexist Community Kitchen to relaunch in new home

An important social enterprise in Bristol which was forced to leave its home last year will soon return, with a relaunch planned for the end of October.

Coexist Community Kitchen started out in 2011 in Hamilton House, running workshops for thousands of people including refugees, people with mental health issues, children and recovering alcoholics.

But following the dismantling and eviction of social enterprise Coexist from the Stokes Croft hub in December 2018, the team behind Coexist Community Kitchen also had to leave and set about searching for a new home.

While keeping a scaled-back programme running at various venues across Bristol, they ran a Crowdfunding campaign with a target of £25,000.

And just months after launching the appeal the target was reached, with a total of 338 people supporting it, which has enabled a brand new kitchen and dining space to be built at the Mivart Studios in Easton.

A spokesperson for the Coexist Community Kitchen said: "Since we left Hamilton House we've been keeping our work going in other locations.

"Soon we will start an amazing collaboration with Migrateful, a London based charity that works to empower refugees and asylum seekers by training them to become a cookery teachers and providing them with meaningful work experience, leadership skills, and an opportunity to practice their English."

One of the main aims of Coexist Community Kitchen is to use cooking to empower people and encourage social change.

The money raised from the campaign was spent on a local eco-architect who has built a "welcoming, functional and professional community kitchen".

If you would like to get involved as a volunteer, there is a training programme which begins on September 27 and takes place every Friday between 10am - 2pm until the end of November.

More information can be found about this on Migrateful's website.
