Bristol shop to shut - and its owner is blaming the FIFA World Cup

A carpet and bed store in Bristol is being shut down.

United Carpets at Brislington Retail Park on Bath Road is closing its doors, the company has confirmed.

The store will be relocating, according to the retailer, but it has not yet known if it will be in Bristol.

The retailer’s turnover grew 10.4 per cent to £24million in 2018 but, despite this, profits fell to £590,000 in the last financial year - down from £1.52million the year before.

United Carpets has blamed the hot summer last year and England’s “successful run” in the FIFA World Cup for an “increasingly difficult trading environment”.

The retailer also blamed ongoing political and economic uncertainties, which it said reduced consumer confidence.

Chief executive Paul Eyre told Business Live: "An unusually hot summer last year, combined with the football World Cup and a softer housing market, made this a challenging year.”

He added: “The business remains well placed with a largely franchised store portfolio operating under a trusted brand, delivering good quality and great value products, and able to take advantage of any upturn in the broader market.”

Mr Eyre also said profit before tax was “within the reduced anticipated range” in March 2019.

Although United Carpets, which has 61 branches in the UK, is closing down its Brislington store, it says it will “continue to consider” new locations and franchisees.

The news comes as B&M announces it is moving into Brislington Retail Park.

The discount retailer is planning to take over the old Toys R Us site on August 30.
