Bristol shop owner who put neighbours through months of misery fined

A Hengrove shop owner who put his neighbours through months of misery has been ordered to pay £1,185.

Jigish Patel used a loud power generator which blighted the lives of those living close by.

To resolve the disturbance, all he had to do was move the machine from the back of the shop to the front.

The noise was so severe, a pupil studying for her exams was even disrupted, Bristol Magistrates Court was told.

Patel, who owns P&H Superstore in Hengrove Lane, ignored repeated warnings from the council and has now been fined £350 and ordered to pay costs of £800 plus a £35 victim surcharge.

Neighbours reported the issue to council officers who then carried out a number of investigations before bringing the case to court.

Councillor Steve Pearce, cabinet member with responsibility for waste, commercialisation and regulatory services, said: “We have a duty to ensure that people living and working in Bristol can enjoy the peace of their own home or premises and making the city a more pleasant place to live and work remains a top priority for both residents and the council.

“We want to send a clear message that we will not allow this to happen in Bristol and this successful prosecution by our neighbourhood enforcement team shows how we are committed to making sure the law is adhered to.”

The law on anti-social noise

Since the court hearing, Patel has moved the generator to the front of the store.
