Bristol shop hit by thieves for second time in a month

A Stapleton convenience shop has been targeted for the second time in a month.

Two men attempted to break into the McColl's on Frome Valley Road at about 12am on February 18, but they fled after being confronted by a member of the public.

But a witness saw two figures with their hoods up enter the store through its window in the early hours of Saturday (March 13).

She said: "They looked male. This time they got in and I saw them climbing out of the hole they'd got in through.

"I don't think McColl's had fixed the window since the last time so it was a perfect opportunity for them."

Pictures from the attempted burglary in February showed the shop window had not been smashed, but there was damage to the glass.

An Avon and Somerset police spokesman said officers were called at 3.19am on Saturday, after offenders forced entry and stole "a quantity" of cigarettes.

After February's attempted break-in, two men were reported to have tried "kicking their way in" to the store, before making off in a vehicle in the direction of Frenchay.

It comes after a series of ram-raids for tobacco products on Co-ops in Clifton and Cheswick Village.

Police said last month they were keeping an open mind about whether the incidents are linked to the Stapleton shop being targeted.

"House to house enquiries have been carried out and CCTV footage from the area will be reviewed as part of our investigation," the force spokesman said today.

"Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the Frome Valley Road area in the early hours of Saturday, or who has any other information which could help, is asked to call 101 and provide the call handler with the reference 5221053603."

A spokesperson for McColl’s said: “We have informed the police of the incident and are unable to comment further.”
