Bristol sees another jump in coronavirus cases, latest figures

A further 16 coronavirus cases were recorded in Bristol today (Wednesday) - one of the biggest daily rises for two months.

According to Public Health England's latest figures, 1,592 people have tested positive for the virus in our city since the start of the pandemic.

While South Gloucestershire reported five new cases, which now has 877.

North Somerset has 1,009 following an increase of three.

And Bath and North East Somerset recorded a rise of six, the total there is 445.

Nationally, 2,659 new cases were confirmed over the past 24 hours, bringing the UK's total to 355,219.

Covid deaths

Neither of Bristol's hospital trusts have recorded a new death over the past 24 hours, where deaths remain at 271.

Southmead Hospital reported a coronavirus-related death on Tuesday August 25, which was the first in the city for two months.

UK-wide, eight further Covid-related deaths were recorded, bringing the UK's total to 41,594.

New rules

The figures come on the same day Boris Johnson has introduced a raft of new measures as cases increase 'rapidly'.

During his first daily press conference for nearly six weeks, the Prime Minister introduced the rule of six -where it will be against the law to meet in groups of six or more.

He said: "If we are to beat the virus, everyone must limit interaction with other households."
