Bristol school sends home another year group after third coronavirus case

A Westbury-on-Trym private school has sent home a year group after its third coronavirus case.

Redmaids' High School, on Westbury Road, became aware on Monday (October 19) a Year-9 pupil had tested positive for Covid-19.

It comes after the girls' secondary, which has 624 pupils, asked two staff members and Year-10 students to self-isolate following two cases last month.

They have since returned, but the school has now told Bristol Live the whole of Year-9 is self-isolating after a new case.

Its spokeswoman said: "On Monday, Redmaids' High School confirmed that a member of their school community has tested positive for coronavirus.

"Anyone who has been directly impacted by this case has already been notified by the school, and a year group bubble is now learning remotely.

"No staff are affected, and all parents and staff members have received a letter with further information.

"Public Health England is satisfied that Redmaids’ High has taken all the appropriate and necessary steps and has confirmed that no further action is required at this time."

Redmaids' head Paul Dwyer said the school remains open while working closely with Bristol City Council and Public Health England.

He added: "The health, safety, and wellbeing of our school community is our number one priority, and we will continue to take every precaution to ensure their safety and mitigate the spread of the virus.”

At least 63 schools in and around Bristol have confirmed cases since the start of the academic year in September - the full list can be found here.

You should book a Covid-19 test if your child has at least one of the following:

  • A high temperature - This means if they feel hot to touch on the chest or back. You do not need to measure their temperature.

  • A new continuous cough - This means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours. If your child usually has a cough, it may be worse than usual).

  • A loss or change to their sense of smell or taste - They've noticed they cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.

If your child does not have symptoms of coronavirus but has other cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, they do not need to be tested.

They and members of your household do not need to self-isolate.

In those circumstances, your child can attend school if fit to do so.
