Bristol school says most year groups self-isolating after new coronavirus case

St Katherine's School in Bristol has told a fourth year group to stay at home after its latest coronavirus case.

The mixed 875-pupil secondary in Abbots Leigh had asked Years 10, 12 and 13 to self-isolate following two cases since October 11.

Now the Pill Road school says Year 8 must also remain at home, after a third case.

Its letter to parents yesterday (October 21) read: "We have been advised by Public Health England that there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 within the school.

"We know that you may find this concerning but we are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England.

"The [parents of] students (Year 8 bubble) who have been in close contact with the individual who has tested positive for coronavirus have received a letter informing them that their child must stay at home for 14 days.

"The school remains open to Year 7, 9, 11, and your child should continue to attend as normal if they remain well, unless they are in Year 8, 10, 12 or 13."

St Katherine's has been approached for further comment.

We have reported yesterday how Redmaids' High School in Westbury-on-Trym has sent Year-9 pupils home after a third case in the school, and Hengrove's Oasis Academy New Oak has closed due to a case.

At least 65 schools in and around Bristol have confirmed cases since the start of the academic year in September - a list can be found here.

You should book a Covid-19 test if your child has at least one of the following:

  • A high temperature - This means if they feel hot to touch on the chest or back. You do not need to measure their temperature.

  • A new continuous cough - This means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours. If your child usually has a cough, it may be worse than usual).

  • A loss or change to their sense of smell or taste - They've noticed they cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.

If your child does not have symptoms of coronavirus but has other cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, they do not need to be tested.

They and members of your household do not need to self-isolate.

In those circumstances, your child can attend school if fit to do so.
