Bristol school reopens following coronavirus outbreak

A Hengrove school, which closed and sent all of its 223 pupils home before half term due to coronavirus, has now reopened.

Bosses at Oasis Academy New Oak, on Walsh Avenue, told parents on October 20 that the building would be shut 'until further investigations have been completed'.

A number of Covid-19 cases were confirmed at the school, which led to the rare measure of closing the entire building to all age groups.

The majority of students were allowed to return to classrooms on Monday (November 2).

A spokesperson said: "Following a number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 before the half term break, we were delighted to be able to re-open to a number of classes, with all classes returning to the academy today (Wednesday, November 4)."

Between September to October, 130 pupils and 73 members of staff were diagnosed with the virus across our city.

This resulted in 74 schools and nurseries in Bristol being partially closed.

You should book a Covid-19 test if your child has at least one of the following:

  • A high temperature - This means if they feel hot to touch on the chest or back. You do not need to measure their temperature.

  • A new continuous cough - This means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours. If your child usually has a cough, it may be worse than usual).

  • A loss or change to their sense of smell or taste - They've noticed they cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.

If your child does not have symptoms of coronavirus but has other cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, they do not need to be tested.

They and members of your household do not need to self-isolate. In those circumstances, your child can attend school if fit to do so.
