Bristol 'school pupil' shoots firework across road and almost hits car

Cotham School is investigating a video of a youth shooting a firework across a road and narrowly missing a car.

The footage – reportedly filmed shortly after school ended on October 20 – shows six youngsters gathered on Cotham Park.

One set off a firework which could be seen flying down the road and causing a loud bang. It passed close to a car which stopped a moment later.

The man who shot the video says the group are pupils at Cotham School, on Cotham Lawn Road.

A school spokeswoman told Bristol Live  the mixed secondary has "much more important" things to do than give a statement on the incident.

An Avon and Somerset police spokesman said: "The school beat manager is aware of the incidents and is fully supporting the school with its investigation."

The man who filmed the firework going off said: "It's very dangerous what they did, but we need to focus on the school and the role it should play with them, and getting the parents involved."

The video prompted several concerned comments on the Nextdoor social media forum.

One woman wrote: "I heard this as I live close by. Didn’t realise it was schoolchildren. Very dangerous."

Another commented: "It's so stupid of them. They threw a firework over the road just as the car was going past.

"Can [the school] not have a word? Should send fire brigade to show them what damage they can cause."

Bristol Live asked Cotham School for a statement on its investigation and the action it would be taking.

A school spokeswoman replied: "We've got much more important things to do."

Asked for clarification, she said: "I didn't say the fireworks weren't important, but we are dealing with even more important things at the school."

The spokeswoman added: "What I was saying was that the school was dealing with more important matters like Covid rather than responding to the press about the firework incident."

Cotham School, which has 1,504 pupils, confirmed 11 new coronavirus cases on October 23 and sent two year groups home.
