Bristol school closes after coronavirus case as hundreds of children self-isolating

A Hengrove primary school has closed and told all pupils to self-isolate after a confirmed coronavirus case.

Oasis Academy New Oak, on Walsh Avenue, informed parents last night (October 20) that all 223 pupils must stay home "until further investigations have been completed".

The mixed primary wrote in an email: "We have been advised by Public Health England that there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 within Oasis Academy New Oak this evening.

"Following discussions with the national team from Oasis Community Learning, the decision has been made to close the school early for the half-term break.

"This means that the school will be closed from Wednesday, October 21, to Monday, November 2."

Oasis Academy would otherwise have broken up for half-term on Friday, October 23.

The email continues: "All children will need to self-isolate until further investigations have been completed. We will contact you again once we have further information.

"Please do not be alarmed as this is a preventative measure to ensure the continued safety of all families, but it is a reminder that we all need to remain vigilant, both in school and in the wider community."

A school spokesman told Bristol Live: "The health and safety of our children and staff is our first priority.

"Last night we were made aware of a confirmed case and a potential case of Covid-19 within our academy community, and have therefore taken the precaution of closing the school today while we investigate these.

"We have not made this decision lightly, but as a small school this precautionary measure removes any risk of the infection spreading while we follow up with the potential case.

"During the closure today the school will be thoroughly cleaned, pupils will be accessing online learning, and we will continue to keep our parents updated."

It comes hours after news emerged Redmaids' High School in Westbury-on-Trym has sent Year-9 pupils home after a third case in the school.

At least 64 schools in and around Bristol have confirmed cases since the start of the academic year in September - the full list can be found here.

You should book a Covid-19 test if your child has at least one of the following:

  • A high temperature - This means if they feel hot to touch on the chest or back. You do not need to measure their temperature.

  • A new continuous cough - This means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours. If your child usually has a cough, it may be worse than usual).

  • A loss or change to their sense of smell or taste - They've noticed they cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.

If your child does not have symptoms of coronavirus but has other cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, they do not need to be tested.

They and members of your household do not need to self-isolate.

In those circumstances, your child can attend school if fit to do so.
