Bristol's under-threat Wetherspoon pub is no longer for sale and will remain open

Bristol is home to a total of 11 Wetherspoon pubs - but for a large period this year it has looked like that number could be reduced to 10.

This was after it was revealed in March that profits at the UK-wide chain fell 18.9 per cent to £50.3million in the first half of this financial year as costs rocketed, especially labour, which increased by around £33million.

This was despite revenue rising 7.1 per cent to £889.6million and like-for-like sales increasing by 6.3 per cent in the same period.

As a result the group announced that it was to sell 16 of its sites across the UK, including St George's Hall in Redfield.

Regulars at the boozer were dismayed at the news when we spoke to them outside it in April, pleading with Wetherspoon's management to keep it open.

And that is what the chain has now decided to do - which will come as very welcome news to those campaigners.

Wetherspoon spokesperson Eddie Gershon told Bristol Live that it will continue to operate under its ownership.

He said: "Wetherspoon has decided to retain the pub.

"There had been an offer to purchase it, but after consideration, we decided to continue to run it as a Wetherspoon pub.

"All the staff have been told and are delighted with the decision. We trust that our loyal customers will welcome the good news too."

Eddie added that number of the sites which were put up for sale in March have been sold, a handful are still up for sale and a few others, including Bristol, have now been taken off the market.
