Bristol's maritime history to be brought to life with fun-filled boat tours

Bristol's fascinating maritime history will be brought to life this weekend with new heritage events complete with traditional sea shanties.

People are being invited to step back in time as they take a tour of the docks on a Bristol Ferry boat.

When aboard the unmistakable yellow boat, interviews with dock workers from decades gone by will be played and accompanied by shadow puppet shows co-created by Aardman animator Adri Piqueras.

Midway through the trips, which take place on Friday and Saturday evening, the boat will stop off at the Grain Barge so people can enjoy refreshments before the voyage heads back to the Cascade Steps in the city centre.

Bristol historian Amy King spent six months collecting individual stories from dockers and archiving material to share stories of those who worked on the docks in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

They recall the heady days of a bustling workplace, when the harbourside was lined with huge warehouses and Guinness boats.

Organiser Kim Fielding, Community Outreach Manager for Bristol Ferry Boats, said the events will provide new ways to find out more about the area - as well as an interesting night out.

"They're going to be really fun events, we've put a lot of work into them and we can't wait for them to come around now," said Kim, who also runs her own theatre company.

"I've printed out books containing the lyrics of five sea shanties which I'll hand out to people when they step foot on the boat, so everyone will be able to sing along.

"We see this as a really fun and interactive way to learn about Bristol's docks, at a time when there were big orange buildings everywhere and not fancy bars."
