Bristol's 'largest zero waste shop' to open on Whiteladies Road

Bristol has welcomed a number of zero waste shops in recent years, as an increasing number of people give more thought to the impact of their actions on the environment.

The most recent was Preserve, which opened its second site in Redfield following the success of its first on Gloucester Road.

This followed in the footsteps of Zero Green in Bedminster and Smaller Footprints in Clifton, giving people all over the city the option of shopping without having to take unnecessary packaging home with them.

And they will soon be joined by another, when Scoop Wholefoods opens on Whiteladies Road.

Taking over the site formerly occupied by clothing brand Phase Eight, Scoop Wholefoods will be the largest zero waste shop in Bristol, according to owner Stephie Mizzi.

The Maltese-born eco-warrior also told Bristol Live what customers can expect at the shop, which opens on August 1.

She said: "The main objective of Scoop Wholefoods is to provide an environmentally friendly and sustainable shopping experience.

"This will be embedded in all aspects of the business, from supply chain selection all the way through to the shop fit out, shopping experience and product selection.

"It will have a special emphasis on trying to source products as locally as possible.

"Our commitment is to reduce waste wherever possible, which is why all items will be sold from bulk bins and containers, in glass packaging, or in home compostable packaging.

"Customers will be encouraged to bring in their own containers which can be re-filled. We will also provide recycled paper bags for customers to use."

Stephie and her partner Rich, who will help run the shop, have run fitness residential bootcamps from their home in Somerset up until recently, but increasingly felt that those attending were becoming more and more conscious of the provenance of what they ate, and that it comes from sustainable sources.

The selection of products that will be sold at Scoop Wholefoods will range from nuts, seeds, grains, flours, oils, condiments, herbs, spices, chocolate and treats to household and bathroom essentials such as shampoo, washing up liquid and floor cleaners.

There will also be a range of household and beauty products, kitchen and bathroom cleaning items, and baby essentials.

Stephie plans to open a second branch in Bath towards the end of the year.

Scoop Wholefoods opens at 98a Whiteladies Road on Thursday, August 1.
