Bristol's Guldhall could be transformed into luxury hotel and spa

Plans are back on the table to transform Bristol's Guildhall - which was severely damaged in a fire - into a luxury five-star hotel with a swimming pool and a rooftop bar.

If plans are approved the hotel - which will have 92 rooms - would also have a restaurant, conference room and event space, plus a spa.

The historic grade II listed building, on Broad Street, is owned by a Bath-based company Broad Street Hotels. There have been plans to turn the 200-room building into a hotel since 2013, when it was temporarily transformed into an art gallery.

However, a fire gutted the building in March last year with a team of 50 firefighters tackling the blaze and pumping water from the harbour to put out the flames.

The 40,000 sqare foot building dates back to the 13th century when it was built for a Guild of Merchants. It was later redesigned in the 19th century but many of the original elements remained.

While the plans for the hotel hint at all sorts of luxury, it certainly wasn't always a place people came to relax. For a long time the Guildhall was used as the city's crown court, and the basement - which would be transformed into a spa - was a prison.

The plans for the building include a two-story extension on the roof, to accommodate th swimming pool and rooftop bar

Initially the plans to convert the building into a hotel were recommended for approval by council officers in 2013 after having sold the building to Trevor Osborne Property Group.
