Bristol's free silent disco to expand with 200 new pairs of headphones

Bristol's legendary silent disco will be even bigger after lockdown, as the person behind it has bought 200 new pairs of headphones.

Free Silent Disco was launched four years ago by Naren Wilks and, before lockdown, took place in Museum Square next to M Shed every weekend.

After staging more than 200 events at the makeshift outdoor club on the harbourside, as well as at more hidden venues including a tunnel in St Werburghs, the popularity of the free parties has soared over the years and Naren found supply was outgrowing demand in the weeks leading up to lockdown.

As a result, he has purchased an additional 200 sets of headphones so more people than ever can get involved in the events once he is able to relaunch them.

"After holding over 220 free events, it seems to me there is no greater privilege than being able to bring joy to people - I can't get enough of it," he said.

"So I want to keep Free Silent Disco alive for as long as possible, to keep people dancing and laughing.

"In the months leading up to lockdown it was doing really well with big turnouts every weekend, which meant some people who wanted to get involved were having to wait, so I realised I needed more kit to meet demand.

"I can't wait to get back out there when all of this blows over."

Naren paid for the new equipment using voluntary donations from partygoers.

As well as staging silent discos every weekend at Museum Square, Naren also loans his kit out to private events, with clients including UWE, University of Bristol, St Werburghs City Farm, Balter Festival and Green Man Festival.

Each set of headphones has three channels which play different genres of varying tempo, with lights on the side of them correlating to each channel to let others know what you're listening to.

Where possible, Naren uses music from local Bristol producers to give them a platform and give them exposure.
