Bristol's daily coronavirus cases reach new six-week record

Bristol has recorded its biggest daily rise in coronavirus cases for the second time this month.

According to figures released by Public Health England today (Sunday, August 16), nine new patients have been diagnosed with the deadly virus in the city over the past 24 hours, bringing our total to 1,397.

On Monday, Government figures showed seven new cases for the city, which was another significant rise.

Before this week, the largest increase had not topped more than five (July 27) for six weeks. While the average figure remains between three to four positive tests a day.

The last time Bristol's cases surpassed nine was on July 3, when the Government updated its data to include tests carried out in community mobile centres as well as hospitals.

All of Bristol's neighbouring districts also recorded rises.

Bath and North East Somerset saw an increase of seven, bringing its district's total to 368. This is one of the largest daily increases this area has recorded for two months as well.

Four further cases were recorded in South Gloucestershire, which now has 783.

While North Somerset recorded an increase of two, bringing the district's total to 925.

Nationally, 1,040 new cases were reported today, bringing the UK's total to 318,484. Public Health England's chart, which log positive lab tests, shows a spike is now building again after months of declining.
