Bristol's Covid hospital admissions and infections rise - latest figures

Hospital admissions and infections across Bristol have risen on New Year's Day, according to the latest Government data.

A further 152 people were diagnosed with the virus in our city over the past 24 hours (January 1). This total is significantly less than yesterday's 327, but similar to Wednesday's 176.

Bristol's total number of Covid patients in hospital have soared from 144 recorded on December 27 to 252 on December 30 - the latest available date.

And 15 coronavirus patients are currently being cared for on ventilators.

Our city's Covid rate per 100,000 people has also increased today to 216.7 - placing us 240th out of a possible 380 areas. This is 40 positions higher than yesterday, when Bristol was ranked 280th.

North Somerset's rate has also peaked, and now stands at 245.5 - placing this district in 204th ranking.

South Gloucestershire's rate is the lowest in the Bristol region, standing at 207.

Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire each recorded another Covid death today.

The daily rise is recorded below, with the accumulative figure since the pandemic began in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset : +59 (4,850)
  • Bristol : +152 (19,006)
  • North Somerset : +58 (5,892)
  • South Gloucestershire : +81 (8,653)

UK cases

The UK's official coronavirus death toll has increased by 613 with a further 53,285 new cases.

There have now been 74,125 fatalities within 28 days of a positive test, although the true toll is believed to be higher than 90,000 when death certificates mentioning Covid-19 are included.

The latest victims include an eight-year-old child in England.

It is the fourth straight day with more than 50,000 lab-confirmed cases. The number of confirmed infections is now 2,542,065.
