Bristol's Covid cases finally dip - but will it be enough to save us from Tier 3?

Bristol's daily coronavirus cases have dropped today (November 23) to the lowest confirmed this month so far.

Our city reported 124 people were diagnosed with the virus over the last 24 hours.

This figure comes after totals of 192, 158, 279, 339 and 253 last week.

The latest data show that almost three weeks into the country's second lockdown, infections are beginning to fall across Bristol and its neighbouring areas. Experts said it should take 14 days for a change in behaviour to show in results.

South Gloucestershire also reported a dip in its daily cases, with 45 - taking the total there to 5,721 since the pandemic began.

Both Bath and North East Somerset and North Somerset reported lower daily infections, with 20 and 35 respectively.

Boris Johnson is expected to announce on Thursday which areas will be thrown into Tier 3.

It's anticipated that Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire will all enter the highest restrictions.

Across the South West, 95 Covid patients were admitted to hospitals on November 20. That brings the overall number of people in hospital in our region with coronavirus to 773.

Local breakdown of daily figures:

  • BANES: +20(3,444)
  • Bristol: +124 (14,474)
  • North Somerset: +35 (3,739)
  • South Gloucestershire: +45 (5,721)

Tier decision

A North Somerset Council spokesman said: “The higher rates of infection we are still seeing in Bristol and South Gloucestershire alongside our own increasing infection rates mean it is likely we will find ourselves in one of the higher levels of alert after 2 December.

“We are waiting for guidance from Government about the national plans for the tier system.”
