Bristol's coronavirus cases reach grim milestone as another lockdown looms

Bristol's coronavirus cases have now surpassed 3,000 since the start of the pandemic.

According to the latest government data (October 15), 159 further people were diagnosed with the deadly virus in our city over the past 24 hours.

That takes our total to 3,024 infections since March.

The figures come on the same day pressure is mounting on Boris Johnson to introduce a circuit-breaker lockdown in England to curb soaring coronavirus infections.

Some scientists have warned the newly-announced three tier local alert system does not go far enough, and only universal measures have any chance of slowing the second wave.

Across the Bristol region, 239 positive lab tests were returned today.

Both South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset reported a rise of 31, bringing their totals to 1,495 and 945 respectively.

And North Somerset recorded 18, its total is 1,375.

The UK's coronavirus death toll jumped by 138 in all settings, with 19,000 new cases of the virus being reported.

It is the third day running with deaths above 100 as almost half of England has been thrown into either Tier 2 or 3 today - with the toughest lockdown restrictions.

Overall, there's now been 673,622 UK cases and 43,293 deaths.
