Bristol's biggest street art mural defaced with 'anti-vax' message

A striking new mural painted as part of this year's Upfest has been vandalised with an 'anti-vax' message.

Just weeks after it was unveiled in place of the iconic Greta Thunberg mural, a corner of the 'Greek goddess of the night' artwork in Ashton Gate has been daubed with bright yellow lettering.

In large capitals, the message neatly spells out: "Say no to Satan's jab."

The huge mural is in a prominent position facing the entrance to Aldi, and was a centrepiece of this year's street art festival.

Greek artist Insane51 created the work of art on the side of the Tobacco Factory on North Street, using a specialist style of painting called double-exposure 3D.

It depicts Greek goddess of the night Nyx, who can be seen in all her beauty when viewed through blue lenses - but red lenses will only show up her skeleton, like an X-ray. It involves spraying one painting on the top of another, with each one revealed separately when viewed through different coloured lenses of three-dimensional glasses.

Last month Upfest's co-founder shared his devastation after other murals were daubed with sinister messages, such as 'Die Upfest' and 'Kill Upfest'.

There is no suggestion that the latest message, which was spotted by passers-by this morning (Saturday, August 28), is linked.

The goddess replaced the famous mural of climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg, painted by Jody Thomas in 2019.

Dozens of people have taken to social media to comment on the controversial update.

One Twitter user commented: "That's really sad to see. Absolutely love the Tobacco Factory murals. Wrong on so many levels."

"Unbelievable. How sad," added another.
