Bristol Rovers women's team video takes cheeky pop at Bristol City

Bristol Rovers has released a video announcing they are launching a new women’s team - and it takes a cheeky pop at Bristol City.

The team known as The Gas Girls will be the first to wear Rovers colours since 2005.

Perhaps referencing Bristol City Women's themselves starting life as Bristol Rovers in 1998, the video starts with players doing kick ups outside Ashton Gate in full blue and white quarters.

This is the latest jibe in a playful back and forth between the clubs' media teams.

Rovers recently released a season ticket video of a man running across the Clifton Suspension Bridge glancing at the City stadium as he makes his way to the Memorial Stadium.

City then plastered their new Robin badge all over the bridge, and posters all over the city.

'Lacking in class' - Fans react as Bristol City and Bristol Rovers go toe-to-toe on Twitter and Facebook

The new video appears to imply Rovers are seeking to take back ownership of women's football in the city.

The swipe has sparked a mixed reaction on social media:

The video shows prominent parts of the city, such as the M Shed, City Hall, and the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Why Bristol City's divisive new crest says everything about where the club wants to go

It also focuses on well-known Rovers landmarks, including the site of the old Eastville stadium and the Black Swan pub in Stapleton Road, which was the club's office from 1899 to 1920.

It ends with them arriving through the tunnel at the Memorial stadium.

The Bristol Rovers Community Trust said: "The aim is to support this growth and further encourage females to play football across Bristol.

"We hope to give as many women and girls, regardless of background, the choice to represent Bristol Rovers.”

Bristol Rovers Women’s have formally applied to enter the Gloucestershire County Women’s Football League, while an Under 18’s team has applied to enter the Gloucestershire FA Under 18’s League.

Leeds United given major play-off worry as Sheffield Wednesday send bizarre message

The club will be driven by the Bristol Rovers Community Trust, which says it has a remit to widen participation in women's football in the city and offer an opportunity for all.

The return of Bristol Rovers Women's team and the video is the latest component of the club's new '4 quarters one community' strand where it looks to position itself as a club with real family values.

Bristol Rovers Women’s will be recruiting players throughout May, June and July at the £6million Lockleaze Sports Centre, the new home of the team.
