Bristol Rovers target Southend United man as Graham Coughlan continues backroom shake-up

Bristol Rovers want to poach a coach from a League One rival as boss Graham Coughlan continues his shake-up of the backroom staff.

The Gas are reportedly interested in making Southend United's Kevin Maher first team coach.

The 42-year-old is currently in charge of the Shrimpers under-23 side but could be offered a first team role at the Memorial Stadium, according to the Echo.

Maher has held the role since 2015 having made 455 appearances for the Essex club during his playing days. The former midfielder has won two Central League Cups in the space of three years in his time as development squad boss.

Coughlan has promised changes behind the scenes at Bristol Rovers this summer after admitting parts of the club need streamlining.

Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol on Friday, he said: "I'd like to get that [his backroom staff] all finalised and all done. I've got one or two things in place but it's just getting things over the line and dotting the Is and crossing the Ts.

"There's lot of people on holidays coming back, there's lots of variables that aren't quite falling into place for us.

"I'll trim the numbers, I'll reduce it, make one or two adjustments, one or two changes."

Joe Dunne has already been named as Coughlan's assistant, while club legend Lee Mansell has become under-23 coach and Chris Hargreaves has taken over from departing Jonny Henderson as academy manager.

Assistant U23 squad coach Brian Dutton has also left his role by mutual consent and joined Darrell Clarke at Walsall.

Coughlan added: "I'm in the process of trying to recruit a goalkeeping coach, we've done the interview process so there's a couple of irons in the fire.

"It is frustrating on my own behalf because I'd like all this to be done and just be concentrating on player recruitment but it is what it is."
