Bristol Rovers set to beat Swindon Town to Cardiff City deal as Paul Tisdale battles injury woes

Bristol Rovers are set to clinch the loan signing of Cardiff City goalkeeper Joe Day.

Rovers boss Paul Tisdale has moved swiftly to try and sign the 30-year-old, who has also been attracting interest from the Pirates' League One rivals Swindon Town and AFC Wimbledon.

Day has not featured at all for Neil Harris' side this season, having struggled for first-team minutes since signing from Newport County in 2019, with Alex Smithies and Dillon Phillips ahead of him.

As such, Harris has recently stated that Day could be allowed to leave the club in January, with the goalkeeper available for transfer.

And with Rovers now set to be without Anssi Jaakkola for a lengthy spell, with Tisdale admitting that his achilles injury is set to rule him out for longer than first expected, the Gas have acted to try and get a deal done for the Cardiff City man.

It is understood that while AFC Wimbledon and Swindon Town have both also expressed interest, Rovers are leading the race to sign Day, who is out of contract at Cardiff at the end of the season.

Day, who possesses extensive experience at League Two level having made more than 200 appearances for Newport, was previously considered by Rovers last January when Jaakkola dislocated his shoulder, only for the opportunity to arise to sign Chelsea's Jamal Blackman instead.

However, 12 months on, the Cardiff goalkeeper is now expected to move to the Mem on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Rovers have also made enquiries for former Blackpool striker Armand Gnanduillet, although he is also reportedly wanted by Championship side Rotherham United.

Bristol Live also understands that signing a right-back is a priority in the January transfer window, with Max Ehmer playing out of position to cover in recent weeks.
