Bristol Rovers reveal new striped home kit inspired by shirt from historic Third Division title win

Bristol Rovers have finally revealed their new home kit for the upcoming campaign, and it's worth the wait.

The design has a retro feel to replicate the shirt the Gas wore as they beat fierce local rivals Bristol City 3-0 to win the Third Division title and promotion in 1989/90 at Twerton Park, 30 years ago this season.

The kit was teased in a 40-second video on Friday, with commentary from that famous day overlaid on footage of a fan flicking through his collection of Rovers shirts.

The new Macron strip sees the return of the traditional colour-block blue and white quarters following the fade design of last season.

A V-neck replaces the collar and there are subtle, retro-style shadow stripes down the whole shirt.

Both the shorts and the socks are blue, and that colour also returns to the sleeves, which were white in 2018/19.

The back of the shirt is a solid blue in another nod to the 1989/90 design.

The front of the shirt is sponsored by energy company Utilita, while Bedminster Down company Poplar Insulation features on the reverse.

In a statement, the club said: "The message behind this year's kit celebrates the memories consigned to each kit, with the 1989/90 shirt being one of the happiest in Rovers fan's memory.

"The sponsors have worked with the club to improve the cohesion between their branding and the club's shirt. In the case of the front logo, 'Utilita' have coloured their logo in a way that works with the quarters of Bristol Rovers."

The new clobber will be a welcome arrival for Gasheads, with their side playing in last season's kit during pre-season, with the 2018/19 away kit mainly on display even when the club have played at home.

An adult shirt will cost £43, and the children's version will be priced at £32. They will be available to buy at the club's open day on Sunday.

With the Gas' online store currently undergoing a revamp ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, the shirt is not yet available to purchase there but will be when the site relaunches in due course.
