Bristol Rovers retained list confirmed: Craig released, Clarke in negotiations and six more depart

Tony Craig, Liam Sercombe and Tareiq Holmes-Dennis’ stints at Bristol Rovers are over after they were released by the Gas.

The club released their retained list on Monday, revealing six first-team players will leave the Mem when their contracts expire at the end of the month.

Sam Matthews, Tom Nichols and Gavin Reilly have also been released, while the club remains in negotiations with out-of-contract captain Ollie Clarke.

Development squad striker Rhys Kavanagh has also been released. Negotiations with Liam Armstrong, Lucas Tomlinson and Harry Warwick are continuing.

"I would like to thank all of those players who are leaving the club for their contribution during their time with us and wish them the very best of luck with their future careers,” Rovers boss Ben Garner told the club’s website.

"We are pleased to retain a strong nucleus to the squad and to have agreed new contracts with a number of players.

“We have also begun our recruitment process in order to strengthen the team. Coupled with the development of the new training ground we are all looking forward to the season ahead."

Craig joined Rovers from Milwall in February 2018 and played 114 games for the Pirates, winning fan-favourite status in the process.

The 35-year-old centre-half’s departure is sure to be met with disappointment, but with his family based in London it is not a huge surprise his time at the Mem is over – despite still having plenty to offer on and off the pitch.

Bristol Live previously reported midfielder Sercombe and left-back Holmes-Dennis were to leave the club, and their departures were confirmed on Monday.

Sercombe, aged 30, played 126 games for the Gas after joining in 2017, while Holmes-Dennis made 29 appearances across two injury-hit seasons.

Midfielder Clarke graduated from the club’s academy before taking the captain’s armband this season, but he and the club are yet to agree to terms on a new deal.

Also departing from the first team are Matthews, Nichols and Reilly.

Midfielder Matthews did not feature in the 2019/20 season after suffering a serious knee injury, while forward Nichols was sent to Cheltenham Town on loan midway through the season.

Reilly was also on loan at the Robins this term, but returned in January and played a handful of games – predominantly from the bench.
