Bristol Rovers praised by St Mochta's as Dublin club celebrate 70th anniversary in style

St Mochta's chairman Trevor Nulty says he could not have asked for more from their 70th anniversary friendly with Bristol Rovers.

The Gas were invited to play a friendly on their pre-season training camp in Ireland to mark 70 years of the Porterstown Road club, and they ran out 7-0 winners.

Nulty said he was blown away by how warmly everyone from Rovers treated their hosts.

He said: "I thought it was a great night, I thought it was absolutely super.

"I thought everything went really well on the night - the organisation was brilliant.

"The respect and the way Bristol Rovers as a club treated us, everybody from the owner to the fans who arrived on the day, the respect they showed towards our club, our organisation, our staff and our players was absolutely super.

"I think it's a credit to them in terms of their approach and how professional they are.

"It was really, really great to see from our perspective.

"The fans were absolutely super, the guys and girls who came across engaged with our fans, with nothing but positive words to say about their club and the way they were treated by our club.

"From our perspective it was really, really happy to see that, then there was a good bit of craic in the pub afterwards.

"So we were really, really happy with everything."

Nulty hopes that it is the start of a friendship between the two clubs, with a number of St Mochta's fans saying they want to get to a game at the Memorial Stadium.

He said: "There was even a fan from Dublin who lives in Bristol but came back over for the game and brought over a top that they'd made up especially with our crest and Bristol Rovers' crest on.

"It was really nice and a great gesture, and I think that just typified the atmosphere on the night, it was really friendly and everyone got on really well.

"We had some of our lads saying we should go over and I absolutely will go over to a game this year."

Despite the result, the chairman says it was a fitting way to celebrate their anniverary.

He said: "We literally couldn't have asked for more - to get a club of that calibre to come to Porterstown Road was absolutely brilliant for us.

"It marked the occasion of our 70th anniversary brilliantly, there was a great crowd and a great atmosphere.

"The result wasn't the best from our perspective but the boys are just back training and were playing a professional outfit.

"I'm very proud of the effort our lads put out on the pitch, it was great to see them going toe to toe with a professional team."
