Bristol Rovers poised to beat Charlton Athletic to sign former Burnley defender

In-demand defender Ali Koiki is poised to join Bristol Rovers.

The 21-year-old left-wing-back is a free agent after rejecting a contract from Burnley, where he spent four years as a youth player, in the summer.

Koiki, a physical presence and a natural fit for Ben Garner's preferred 3-5-2 and 3-4-2-1 formations, was in talks with Charlton Athletic. Sunderland were also reportedly keen on the player

But he failed to come to an agreement with the Addicks and is now expected to move to the Mem before Friday's transfer deadline.

The move was first reported by journalist Pete O'Rourke, and Bristol Live understands the report to be correct.

Rovers appear well stocked on the left side, with David Tutonda, Luke Leahy and Michael Kelly on the books, but Koiki has been a coveted prospect for EFL clubs in this window and his signing represents something a coup for the Gas.

Claims Garner's side is lightweight will be well and truly quashed by the addition of Koiki, a muscular 6ft 2in player who will bring speed and physicality.

He is also capable of playing in a more advanced role on the left flank.

Koiki started his youth career at Crystal Palace, where Garner's coaching journey began, before being released and joining the Clarets in 2016.

Koiki spent last season on loan with League Two champions Swindon Town, making 15 league appearances, and he returned to Turf Moor craving regular minutes.

He turned down the chance to stay in Lancashire, and is on the verge of completing a move to the Mem.

Once the deal is confirmed, the London-born defender will become Rovers' 12th signing in this window.
