Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Wycombe: Coburn, Collins impress but Gas stutter in second half

James Belshaw - 6

Had a watching brief in the opening exchanges as Rovers made a rapid start, but he was busy dealing with crosses before long as Wycombe started making their presence known in the game, although he was rarely forced into a save. David Wheeler's equaliser came from point-blank range and Belshaw could do nothing about it. For the second, there was a shade of misfortune as he made a firm save from Anis Mehmeti's shot but the ball rebounded kindly for Lewis Wing on the edge of the box, who squeezed his shot just inside the post. A couple of punched crosses aside, he had little to do in the end.

Luca Hoole - 6

Had the travelling Gasheads purring with an authoritative start to the game. Anis Mehmeti was a tricky opponent and Hoole had his hands full, but he did well to hold him up when he could. Rovers were able to get Hoole into attacking positions often and could have tried his luck by whipping the ball into the area once or twice, but he took passing options instead.

Bobby Thomas - 6

Chance had it that many of Wycombe's most threatening moments in the first half had Thomas in close proximity and the Burnley prospect was impressive in clearing the danger. However, he will be disappointed with his involvement in the build-up to Wycombe's second goal, losing out in the middle of the park in a situation where he ought to have taken charge. Cruelly, he was made to pay later in the move.

James Connolly - 6

Sam Vokes was always going to be the dangerman, with the Wales international a tough matchup for any defender at this level. Connolly had numerous encounters with the big man throughout the game and the Rovers defender won his fair share of aerial duels, but the ones he lost led to chances for Wycombe – as was the hosts' gameplan.

Lewis Gibson - 6

Moved out to left-back and he was competent in that role. Naturally, Gibson offered less of an attacking threat but, by and large, he helped deal with the defensive challenges Wycombe's direct tactics posed.

Paul Coutts (c) - 6

Had a tough job policing the battle for the second balls in front of the back four with Wycombe aiming for Vokes with long balls and then converging with Mehmeti, Wheeler et al. Not at his usual high standards of distribution from the centre of the park and he was harshly punished for challenges by the referee time and again.

Antony Evans - 6

His pinpoint pass to Collins unlocked the Wycombe defence for the early opener and Evans was buoyed from that moment, pulling the strings in the first half. Like his teammates, he could not reach the same levels of after the break and a snatched shot deep into stoppage time summed up the dip in the collective performance level.

Scott Sinclair - 6

Played on the left of a midfield three with a licence to roam out wide when the time was right. Neat and tidy as you would expect, but he was contained to a minimal influence.

Aaron Collins - 7

Added another goal involvement to his impressive collection this season, and this assist was one of his best. He burst into space down the right and delivered a perfect cross for Coburn to convert. Posed a big threat all game, but nothing else quite came off for him.

John Marquis - 6

Started well and played an unsung role in the opening goal, dragging a defender out of position with great movement before laying the ball off to Evans. Linked well with Collins and Coburn in the first half, but his influence waned much like the team as a whole and he was replaced.

Josh Coburn - 8

Has quite the knack for getting on the end of Collins' crosses and the Welshman's delivery in the fourth minute made it nigh-on impossible for him to miss. Of course, Coburn took the chance to add to his impressive tally for the season. Caused problems aplenty throughout the afternoon, despite a distinct decline in the quality of service after the break.

Substitutes

Sam Finley (for Sinclair on 58') - 6

A welcome return from injury. Could not create the chance Rovers needed, but Barton will be delighted to have him back with important games ahead.

Luke McCormick (for Marquis on 69) - 7

Brought the spark Rovers needed, but it did not quite culminate in the goal they needed. Nonetheless, a cameo he can build on.

Ryan Loft (for Gibson on 83') - 6

Made his presence felt with the few moments he had, but Wycombe managed the closing stages well.

Not used: Anssi Jaakkola, James Gibbons, Lewis Gordon, Harvey Saunders.
