Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Oxford United: Evans and Belshaw make their mark at both ends

James Belshaw - 8

Got a hand on it, but had no real chance of preventing Matty Taylor's close-range opener. Three times he was rescued by his goalframe, but Belshaw did his fair share of work too. He made important saves to deny Brannagan, Sykes and Moore.

Alfie Kilgour - 6

Will be frustrated to let Marcus McGuane run off him for Oxford's second goal, but he was good otherwise. Won his headers and helped Rovers play out from the back without much trouble.

Connor Taylor - 7

Should have been tighter to his namesake when he found space in the six-yard box to tap in, but he was close to his bruising best from there. Cleared his lines efficiently.

Cian Harries - 7

Solid. Used the ball well when he had it and minimised Oxford's threat down his side of the defence.

Harry Anderson - 6

He and Coutts appeared to allow Mark Sykes too easy a route in behind in the build-up to the opener. Had little to aim at, but his clever cross from the right gave Grant a chance to be a nuisance and it led to the equaliser.

Paul Coutts (c) - 5

Could have done more to prevent the opener. He neither applied pressure to the ball nor did he track the runner. Improved before half time, drawing a superb save from Simon Eastwood. Appeared to lose track of Marcus McGuane for the second goal. Taken off with a knock.

Glenn Whelan - 7

Short his usual authority on the game with Oxford enjoying some dominant spells at the start of either half, but his presence was crucial at the end, spraying the ball around classily as Rovers probed for an equaliser.

Josh Grant - 8

The utility man has added another position to the list. Had a hand in the goal and looked more than comfortable as a left wing-back on his return from injury. Would have stayed on if cleared to play for longer by the medics.

Sam Finley - 8

Trademark aggression gave Rovers some crunch in the midfield battle and he scored a superb equaliser in first-half stoppage time, lashing a dropping ball into the corner on his weaker left foot on the half-volley.

Antony Evans - 8

Unlucky not to score the equaliser not long after Oxford went ahead, clipping the outside of the post with a 20-yard try. Was a threat as a makeshift striker and made chances with some creative set plays. He got a deserved goal, dispatching from the penalty spot to send the tie to a replay.

Sam Nicholson - 6

No shortage of graft leading the line and he came close to creating scoring opportunities for himself, but it was not quite his day. Did an important job for the team, though.

Substitutes

Luca Hoole (for Grant on 68') - 7

Helped steady the ship after a spell of Oxford dominance.

Sion Spence (for Coutts on 82') - 6

Got stuck in.

Aaron Collins (for Anderson 82') - 8

Bravely took a whack for the team to win the penalty which earned the replay. He knew he was going to get clattered, but he got in ahead of Hanson.

Not used: Jed Ward, Zain Westbrooke, Ryan Jones, Pablo Martinez, Jarmani Langlais.
