Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Leyton Orient: Saunders provides spark but Gas suffer defeat

James Belshaw - 6

Let down badly by his defence for the opener, with Harry Smith given the freedom of Bristol to score with a stooping header at the near post. Theo Archibald's brilliant volley gave him no chance. The goalkeeper almost pulled off an excellent save from Aaron Drinan for the third goal, but there was too much power for his outstretched palm, rounding off a miserable first half with the keeper at no fault at all. His kicking and comfort at crosses continues to impress.

Alfie Kilgour - 4

Started nervously. Improved somewhat as the game wore on, but could have helped Connor Taylor by tracking Aaron Drinan's run.

Connor Taylor - 4

Needed to get more purchase on his clearing header in the lead-up to the second goal, and he lost touch with Aaron Drinan for the third. Some good work, but a patchy performance.

Nick Anderton - 4

Endured a torrid first half, getting the hook at half time. His miscommunication with Aaron Collins led to the third goal.

Josh Grant - 5

Looked comfortable at wing-back, creating one good chance as a result of5 a well-timed press.

Glenn Whelan - 4

Seemed to be behind the game for long periods. Some patches of neat and tidy passes, but very clearly still getting up to speed.

Sam Finley - 6

Rovers' best player on the day, and possibly overall. Showed his combative streak in midfield, did plenty of hard running. His vision gave Rovers an intermittent threat in behind.

Junior Brown - 5

Largely untroubled at both wing-back and full-back, but lacked influence in the attacking third.

Antony Evans - 4

His influence on the game was minimal by the time he was taken off for the final quarter.

Aaron Collins - 4

Was very harshly penalised by referee David Rock after getting the better of Dan Happe and driving for goal. It halted a big chance for the Gas. Got into good areas in the first half, but did not capitalise on them. Dallied on the ball in the build-up to the third goal.

Brett Pitman - 5

Endured a frustrating first half where he got into dangerous areas but he was well contained by the Os defence. Dispatched a late penalty to give Rovers a consolation goal.

Substitutes

Harvey Saunders (for Anderton on 46') - 7

Was unlucky not to get draw a foul from Os goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux shortly after coming on, with the goalkeeper's gamble to race off his line only just paying off thanks to a toe on the ball. Saunders was always a willing runner and won a late penalty.

Harry Anderson (for Collins on 67') - 5

Ineffective and frustrated on the left flank.

Luke Thomas (for Evans on 67') - 5

Some moments of quick thinking, but few standout contributions in his cameo.

Not used: Jed Ward, Zain Westbrooke, Paul Coutts, Cian Harries.
